Proper Cleaning and Care For Your Tonneau Covers
by: Kay Zetkin
Vinyl, leather or other flexible and soft materials – these are what tonneau covers are usually made of. If you have a truck or convertible, you can use a tonneau to protect its interior or truck bed.
This is especially useful if the soft top of the convertible is down. You can also use the tonneau for pickup trucks to protect your luggage and the other cargo that you would like to place on the truck bed, against foreign objects like dirt or dust and also against weather conditions such as rain, sleet and snow.
If you want to prolong the function and usage of this important truck accessory, then it is necessary to do a regular checkup for wear and tear, looseness and other types of debris that might be caught in it. You should also regularly check its mounting hardware so that you can make sure that all of its clamps or bolts are still tight. You may also need to have the locks regularly lubricated using silicone spray or high quality Teflon. You can do this by using a can that could be inserted with a plastic tube Most of all, you also need to check with its manufacturer and learn about the necessary cleaning or maintenance guides according to the specific type or design of truck bed cover.
When you clean your truck, convertible and its accessories, make sure that you do it in a shaded spot – either in an open garage or under a tree. Washing the lid with clean, cool water and mild soap is the best way to start. First step is to flood its lid with water in order to remove the accumulated surface grime that may scratch the finish if you just wipe it. Next, use a hose to rinse the cover and make sure that all traces of soapsuds have been removed along with the excess water. You can remove excess water by using a sponge. Make sure that the entire truck has been rinsed off with soap and water since the excess soap might streak the paint finish of the vehicle.
Remember not to use chemicals like dishwashing liquids, detergents, harsh cleaners, bleaches, strong cleaners, dry-cleaning solvents and other strong type of chemicals for cleaning. These might contain a mixture of substances that could be harmful and damage your truck accessory. Avoid using hot water, also to clean your truck bed cover.
If you think that your cover is still dirty or grimy even after doing the cleaning process, then you can repeat the recommended process.
