When you lift the hood of your car you see a lot of components. All at the same time. Unless you are into automobiles this complex visual will deter you from attempting to understand much about what lies under the hood. Usually you limit yourself to understanding just what is needed to accomplish the task for which you raised the hood.

However under the hood this complex set of components is what makes your car perform the way it does. Each component has a function which can be understood in simple language if you have the time and someone is around to explain it simply. Let us for example take up performance headers.

Performance headers are car components that, as their name implies boost the performance of the car. To understand them let us first see how the engine powers your car. The power reaches your car in the form of chemical energy stored in the unburnt fuel. It is the car engine that converts this chemical energy through combustion into mechanical energy and through a variety of linkages reaches this mechanical energy to the wheels which drive the car.

This conversion of chemical energy into mechanical energy is at the heart of the engine. It is done by exploding the fuel in a confined space called a cylinder. This cylinder has a piston which goes in and out of the cylinder. When the explosion occurs the piston gets thrown outward with considerable force and this force is what drives the car. Its that simple. But wait there are questions to be answered. How did the fuel get into the cylinder in the first place? And what happens to all the exhaust gases that are created when the explosion occurs?

The fuel is injected into the cylinder when the piston is going back into the cylinder. In four stroke engines the piston also goes back in and forces the exhaust gases out. Now how quickly these exhaust gases leave determines how quickly the next explosion can take place. Cars usually have more than one cylinder. In stock cars the exhaust gases from each cylinder are gathered and then ejected. However this is not very efficient. It is better to take the exhaust gases from each cylinder and reach it directly to the exhaust pipe. This is what performance headers do. In doing so they make the engine run more efficiently.

Does your car corner like a boat? You know. That feeling you get where everybody leans away from the turn as one side of the car dips and the other rises? The problem is you either have no sway bar or a very weak one.

Every car pitches when it goes into a corner. The pitch represents the number of degrees the car tilts when it turns. The higher the pitch, the more the car is considered to roll. In general, roll is not good. It is uncomfortable and puts stress on everything from your tires to steering linkage and even the frame of the car. Over time, this can all cause problems.

The sway bar is a creation that is designed to address the roll in cars. These bars work by creating rigidity in the car structure from a horizontal perspective. They are connected the suspension and work by transferring the tension in a turn from one side of the car to the other. This keeps the car from rolling and cuts the pitch dramatically.

So, how can you use a sway bar to stop your car from rolling? Well, you can buy an aftermarket sway bar kit for most cars these days. Every kit works a bit differently, so you’ll need to go by the specific instructions that come with it. I realize this goes against of fiber of being for most men, but this is one time where you really want to read the instructions.

Generally, most kits are designed to be used on the front suspension. They are surprisingly easy to install. Why? They run across the top of the engine and are secured at the top of the strut assembly. If you pop your head and look about two thirds of the way back from the front of the car towards the driver’s compartment, you’ll see a mount sticking up. This is the top of the strut. There are usually three or more bolts. The sway bar kits are designed to fit right on these connections. Again, it depends on the kit and the car, but it is a surprisingly simple process.

If you are getting sea sick form the roll your car performs in turns, a sway bar could be the answer. Kits run a couple hundred bucks, but make a major difference in how your car drives. They are definitely worth it if you are in the car a lot.

A torque converter does the job of the clutch in a vehicle with manual transmission. It transfers the rotating power generated by a vehicle’s engine to the transmission mechanism in order for it to shift gears automatically. There are three major torque converter parts—the pump, the turbine, and the stator.

The pump is attached to directly to the engine, and spins at the same speed as the motor. Inside the pump are many fins, which, as the pump spins, direct hydraulic fluid outward to the turbine. The turbine then spins at close to the same speed as the engine, but in the opposite direction. The spinning of the turbine causes the transmission torque converter to rotate and drive the wheels. The hydraulic fluid exits the turbine at its center, moving in the direction opposite to how it was forced in by the pump.

The beneficial part of a torque converter is that it is able to enhance torque when there is a difference between the input and output speed of rotation, which then provides about the same torque as a reduction gear. A converter can be, and is often, used not only in automobiles but also in boats and in buses used for public transportation.

A converter, like any vehicle part, gets worn out and requires the occasional torque repair or torque converter part replacement. You can also opt to upgrade your converter for a high performance driving experience. When you know the limits of your converter, you can spare yourself from torque repair woes, which is more common than you might think. Of course, most of the problems can be avoided by simply knowing the limitations and capabilities of your converter.

Overheating is probably the most common converter problem encountered by users. There is more than one reason for overheating your converter. There could be a defect on the spark plugs; the distributor timing might be off, or there is continuous high level of slippage. Torque repair shops would have to control this situation by checking for the seals, to make sure they haven’t melted away. Broken seals lead to leaks, and leaks lead to poor circulation of transmission fluid.

Due to sudden loading or excessive heating of the converter, the pump and/or turbine blades may get deformed, separated from their hubs or annular rings. On worse cases, they may even break into fragments. At the least, this type of transmission torque converter will result in a significant loss of efficiency, producing symptoms similar to those seen in stator clutch failure. In extreme cases, you might have to undergo total torque rebuild mode. Replacement of torque converter parts like the turbine and the stator is an expensive process. This problem can be rooted to plain bad and careless driving.

A converter problem called ballooning is also commonly seen among units. What happens is, pressure and stress put on the converter’s housing causes it to distort and eventually break. Hot oil and converter parts will automatically spew out. This is a very serious problem that is caused by prolonged operation under excessive loading, very abrupt application of load, or operating a torque converter at very high RPM. For efficient and high performance of your converters, make it a habit to regulate speed and load. The occasional check up is also helpful.

A “Rat Rod” is not a Hot Rod or a Street Rod and it’s for sure not a “Traditional Rod” there’s a huge difference between them all! Traditionals are purpose built machines with a very unique look and style a Rat Rod is completely different. A traditional rod is it’s own animal with it’s own roots and followings. Hot Rods can really mean anything that been juiced up. A Honda could be your “Hot Rod” A Street Rod is usually a high dollar rod.

First things first lets explain just exactly where “Rat Rod” comes from. Back in the dust bowl days folks would grab anything they could and strap all they could to it and move across country looking for work, food or just escape from the dust. When these folks arrived in the big eastern and western cities folks called them “Rats” as if they had jumped ship and poured onto land. When these folks showed up in cars and trucks of all manor held together in any number of ways using any number of parts….. As folks traveled across country the cars broke down and needed to be repaired. A ” True Rat Rod” is built from anything that can be used! Originally, built not for looks, but as necessary transportation, the rat rod has made a resurgence in popularity. These cars started popping up in the U. S. In the late ’40s and early ’50s, being the less expensive than their hot rod counterparts. They were unfinished as far as interior and paint, but ran. Today they are built to look similar to those from yesteryear, but perhaps it takes a little work to get that unfinished look just right.

Now there cars are built to look like those from the 1950’s and ’60s. And, many of the parts are that old. Of course, the cars have to be street-worthy, but they don’t have to look it. The engine works and the frame is sturdy, but there may be no bells or whistles. They have the powerful engines of old-fashioned cars, may use a lot of gas and may be pretty noisy to ride in.

Fanciers suggest making them from scratch. You can pick up a pretty inexpensive frame or body at most any wrecking or junk yard. Of course, the older the model, the more it may cost. It can be most any brand, Chevy, Ford, Buick or a foreign make. The body will need to be gutted and then redesigned in any fashion desired. And you can resize it, making a two-seater into only one, or raising or lowering the ride.

You’ll then need to pick or build an engine. If this is all new to you, you may want to purchase a rebuilt engine that is ready to go. While it doesn’t have to be the same model or make as the body, it does have to fit, or you’ll have to adjust the frame to make it fit. You will need the right size driveshaft, or readjust one to properly fit. The wheels and rims can be anything you want and just add tires.

Finish it how you want. Get a steering wheel and other interior parts you desire. Don’t forget seatbelts. And voila, you have your rat rod. You can paint it, but you don’t have to, as these cars are known for that unfinished look.

Rat rods are often found in car shows and parades all around the country. There are also fancier clubs in all most every region and for online chat. Because of their regained popularity, there are complete cars and parts available on many websites and online auctions. And, they don’t have to be cars, there are rat rod trucks and motorcycles as well.

Like other car enthusiasts, the rat rod can be a fun hobby and perhaps, not as expensive as other types of vehicles. It is a great way to learn about cars and how they are built and a good way for fathers and sons, brothers and friends, to spend time together. They make a great project in a high school or college auto class and you turn out with something functional as well.
