1951 Ford F-100: Setting the Bar for the Second Half of the 20th Century

Like the rest of America, the Ford Motor Company looked forward to a bright future following the end of World War II. Ford’s first post-war pickup, known as the F1, was launched in 1948, and given several upgrades for the 1951 model year.

’51 Ford F100 Design Changes

Popular features carried forward from the 1948-50 models into 1951 included a higher, wider cab and seats with increased comfort compared to previous war-year trucks. The 1951 model also sported a redesigned grille featuring a single, curved horizontal bar accented by three vertical struts – somewhat reminiscent of the design of fighter jets of the time. This style was found only on the 1951 and 1952 models, making them easy to distinguish from previous or following years.

The 1951 Ford F100 was available in a range of variations, including pickup, panel van, flatbed and stake truck. The ’51 Ford F100 options included a choice of 95-h.p. 226-cubic-inch six-cylinder or 100-h.p. 239 cubic-inch V-8 engines, dual windshield wipers augmented by a novel foot-actuated windshield washer system, and dual sun visors.

1951 F100 specs included a 114-inch wheelbase and 6.5 foot bed on a half-ton chassis, with a three-speed stick-shift transmission used for both the straight six or V-8 engines. (Technically, this truck was still an F1 model, as the century designation wasn’t officially applied by Ford until the 1953 model year).

The Story Behind the 1959 Chevrolet El Camino

The first gen 1959 Chevrolet El Camino is considered a coupé pickup because it merged the lines of a car with the utility of a farm truck, and it was a design with a lot of history behind its making.

The History Behind the Creation of the 1959 Chevy El Camino

Long before there was a sporty coupe pickup with great fins and an edgy stance: long before anyone had ever looked at a tough little car-truck and whispered the name El Camino, there was an Australian woman who wanted a nice church ride that could haul some pigs, too.

The story behind the creation of coupé pickups, like the ’59 El Camino, goes back to the early 1930’s, when the wife of an Australian farmer wrote a letter to the Ford Australia company asking for a vehicle that would be suitable to take to church on Sunday and then haul hogs to market on Monday. Then, a few years of development and competition led us to the delivery of the first generation Chevy El Camino hitting the streets.

’59 El Camino Specs

With an overall length of 210.9 inches and a wheelbase of 119 inches, the front engine, rear wheel drive ’59 Chevy El Camino stood 56.4 inches tall and came in the buyer’s choice of two series.

The 1959 El Camino 1100 series was the six cylinder model while the 1200 series delivered the power of a V8 engine.

Engine Options for the ’59 El Camino

Seven different engine options were offered in the 22,246 Chevrolet El Caminos produced in 1959:

  1. The 1-bbl 235 ci engine that delivered 135 horsepower
  2. The 2-bbl 283 ci V8 that offered drivers 185 hp
  3. The 4-bbl 283 ci V8 that provided 230 horsepower
  4. The 4-bbl 348 ci V8 with its 250 hp delivery
  5. The 3×2-bbl 348 ci V8 that offered 280 hp
  6. The 4-bbl 348 ci High-Lift Cam V8 that provided 300 horsepower
  7. The 3×2-bbl 348 ci High-Lift Cam V8 and its 315 hp delivery

1959 El Camino Transmission Options

A total of five different engine transmission options were offered in the 1959 El Camino models, including: a 3-speed manual, a 3-speed overdrive manual, a 4-speed manual, a 2-speed PowerGlide automatic, and a 3-speed TurboGlide automatic.

Slammed and Chopped 1953 Chevrolet Pickup

I was looking for a rat rod to write about this afternoon, and I got distracted from my quest when I ran across this awesome slammed and chopped 1953 Chevrolet pickup truck.

Check Out This Customized 1953 Chevrolet Pickup Truck!

In 1953, Dwight Eisenhower became President, Peter Pan flew into literary history, and the slammed and chopped Chevy truck in the picture above rolled off the production line.

Okay, some other stuff happened, too, and this truck looked a lot different back then, too.


This customized truck has been slammed, which at its very simplest definition, means it sits very low to the ground, with its frame, obviously, I guess, having a very low clearance.


A chopped top is also part of the customization this truck has undergone – and at its simplest, the term means a section has been removed from the pillars on the cab, and the windshield has been sectioned to accommodate the shorter space.

The stunning mate black and vibrant blue theme is carried through to the interior of this ’53 Chevy truck, with black seats featuring blue welt for contrast, a blue steering wheel, and incredible lacy blue floral graphics painted over a black base on the dashboard.

This truck is a piece of art just as much as it is a vehicle, and it’s listed for sale or trade on eBay and there will be a couple more photos dropped on the Classifieds page here on the site if you want to check them out.

Buick and Chevrolet, two of the world’s most famous automobile brands, have a huge following worldwide not only for their modern, sleek models but also for their vintage collectible models. As a matter of fact, there are clubs and organizations formed solely for passionate collectors of noteworthy authentic Chevrolet and Buick models with historical value. Vintage Chevrolet Club of America, with chapters in states like Portland and Washington, publishes its own magazine called Generator and Distributor with articles on how to care for vintage models, specifically automobiles manufactured in early 1900s up to the 1980s. VCCA members have the privilege to contribute personal stories and tips regarding Chevys. Another great thing about being a member of organizations such as VCCA is that one has the opportunity to keep in touch with other vintage car fanatics around the country as well. If a person is a self-proclaimed Buick and Chevrolet fanatic but he doesn’t own even one model, he can still join VCCA because the organization doesn’t limit itself to automobile owners.

On the other hand, Buick vintage collectors can join Buick Club of America which constantly organizes car shows and tours. BCA members can gain access to their informative forums discussing the specifics of pre-war and post-war models as well as useful tips for preserving and polishing earlier models. Buick and Chevrolet models manufactured before the World War II, mostly made of nickel and brass, naturally require meticulous care to keep up with the modern times. In fact, BCA has a sub-organization to specifically deal with restoring and caring for pre-war Buicks.
